As a teacher we must continue to learn new ways to teach and stay up on all the current subject matter. Readwritethink.org provides evidence that a teacher can do that. By having a great website such as this that can give tips and ideas on how to continue to provide great lessons and help with the struggling readers in my clasroom. I believe teachers are lifelong learners and need to attend seminars, lectures and read the internet for the most up to date ideas to be used in the classroom. Readwritethink.org is a great supplement to any teacher to help them be successful.
I chose the Readwritethink.org website. I am not sure what the cost of that site is but it is adjoined with the website for the NCTE which is the National Council of Teachers of English. The cost for membership is $40.00 per year. My favorite part of Readwritethink.org website is the lesson plans, they are categorized in the index by title, grade or date. Each lesson has an entire theory to practice, student objectives and instructional plans and even tells the teacher how long that particular lesson will take to give among other great tools teachers can use. Under the lesson plan a teachers can use the classroom resources such as crossword puzzles, picture dictionary etc.
Among the interesting places to go in this site is the calendar which gives dates that are important to the literary world. For example on October 16th Noah Webster dictionary author was born in 1758. A great segment to help teachers is the Student materials section which features interactive tools to supplement the lesson plans readwritethink provides. They even list each tool and which lesson plans they go with. For example the tool named Animal Inquiry which lets students explore 4 facets of the animal like where they live their habitat.
The site has an area called Literacy Engagements across the Day this gives information on specifically how a teacher can make their lesson language functions appropriate for their class. Among the other great information this site provides it also lists many web resources a teacher can turn to for information. With over 80 sites to go to all have something to do with literacy?.
The NCTE website (which is the parent website to Readwritethink.org ) had information on joining, upcoming conventions and offer subscriptions to their magazine. I also found their online store to have some great finds. They also provide information on the Pathway Program. But again I loved the classroom tested lesson plans they offer to teachers of all age ranges. Also this site unlike the other handles the legislative side of this organization for their members. They seem to a great resource and advocate for children’s literacy.
